The International Journal for Academic Development (IJAD) is the journal of the International Consortium for Educational Development. The purpose of IJAD is to enable academic/educational/faculty developers in higher education across the world to exchange ideas about practice and extend the theory of educational development, with the goal of improving the quality of higher education internationally.

The editors welcome original contributions on any aspect of academic/educational/faculty development in higher and other post-school education (including staff development, educational development, instructional development and faculty development) and closely related topics. We define ‘academic development’ broadly, and you should read former editor Brenda Leibowitz’s recent paper, ‘Reflections on academic development: what is in a name?’ (http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/rija20/19/4#.VMcX6_7oSGo) to make sure that your understanding of academic development marries with the general sense of the journal. We will NOT accept submissions on K-12 development or teacher education; primary/secondary/high school education in general; or the role that education plays in ‘development’ (economic growth, poverty reduction, environmental sustainability, etc.).

The main criterion for acceptance of all types of submissions is that they make a contribution to the knowledge, understanding and/or practice in the field of academic/educational development.

Contributions must be of international interest. Authors can achieve this in several ways. Ideas and practice can be introduced from more than one country. A contribution may be based in practice in one country, or even one institution, or from one disciplinary perspective, and accompanied by commentaries from colleagues in other countries/institutions/disciplines. Or, a contribution may be contextualised with reference to issues of concern to academic/educational developers worldwide as evidenced in the scholarly literature such as institutional change, and the nature or role of academic/educational development. Other approaches to addressing the interests of an international audience will also be welcomed.

The editors welcome submissions of articles, reflections on research, reflections on practice, and book reviews. Contributions should explore the wider implications for academic/educational developers by both drawing on and connecting back to the literature. Thus, articles that describe a local initiative without describing the wider implications for academic/educational developers elsewhere will not normally be published.

When you are planning your article, we ask you to submit a summary of your proposed contribution – roughly 250 words – via the International Journal for Academic Development ScholarOne Manuscripts site at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ijad. It would be very useful if you include a short list of (up to 5) key articles/references that you are most likely to use in your paper. The editors will provide feedback on the suitability of the contribution to the journal. See the Instructions for Authors tab for further details on the entire submission process.

Peer review policy

All research articles undergo rigorous peer review, with initial editor screening followed by anonymous reviewing, normally by two referees.

Reflections on Research and Reflections on Practice are reviewed by members of the Editorial Team. Book reviews are reviewed by the relevant book review editor.
