It is revealed that tiered seating, proper lighting, upgraded desks, technological tools and gadgets and appropriate class room temperature drive students to show higher concentration level and better academic achievements. It is all because student’s satisfaction and comfort level increases which leads to better participation and enhanced focus on learning. The present day class rooms are radically different from traditional class rooms. The universities are now providing wide range of communication facilities including interactive white boards’ animations, personal computers, projection and multimedia tools. The students have thus, become more collaborative and team-work oriented unlike traditional class rooms, where knowledge sharing was not this easy.

Intangible factors contributing positive class room environment:

Though the importance of physical factors in class room environment cannot be denied, it is also worth mentioning that, there are many intangible elements which play an equally significant role in creating a healthy class room culture for effective learning. Let’s deliberate a bit on these also.

Emotional environment:

Teachers play a vital role in creating an emotional atmosphere in class where all students feel they are being received equal attention. They need to show politeness, respect and consideration towards student’s self esteem. This behavior generates highly positive vibes in class and students feel energetic and motivated.

Since most of today’s class rooms are culturally diverse and students belong to various religious and ethnic communities, it is very important for teachers to create an environment, where students learn tolerance and respect of difference in opinion.

Class room organization:

An organized class room is one where there is no mess and students as well as teachers, are aware that cleanliness is their prime responsibility. The atmosphere of class must be calm and free from noise pollution.

It is observed that some teachers do not control noise level in class and these results in distraction of attention, as students cannot focus on lectures. Such environment affects students learning negatively and results in poor academic performance.

Better lesson planning is yet another factor which helps creating a good class room environment. Teachers must plan their teaching schedules effectively without creating any communication barriers or overloading students with unmanageable tasks.

Class room culture:

The class room culture has a great impact on student’s learning behavior. The culture of the class may be designed jointly by teachers and students. Norms and rules regarding class room disciplines must be framed in the very beginning of the session and all students must agree that any violation will lead to punishments. Teachers must make all students aware regarding the consequences of discipline violations. Remember a disciplined class may achieve good results both in academics and extra curricular activities.

Building relationships:

A great part of learning involves relationships and personal interaction. This may be between teachers and students and also among fellow students. For a great learning experience, it is very important that teachers develop a cordial and friendly relationship with students. The students should not feel hesitant to ask any question about course or personal well being. Communication barriers if any, must be eliminated by teachers to ensure that all students are having good comprehension of whatever is being taught to them.

Conclusion:

Class room environment, physical as well as cultural and emotional, is highly significant in learning process and academic performance of students. It is therefore mandatory for planner, experts and educationists to ensure creation of an environment in class room which help motivating students to learn effectively.
